In a Country far far away....

.... in this country where I am now, they have never heard of Singapore, until now.

Someone: Where are you from?
Me: Singapore
Someone: Isn't that the country where you still have the death penalty?
Me: Er... is that the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear about Singapore?
Someone: Its all over the news. You people are hanging a guy transiting through your country with drugs.
Me: What else have you heard about Singapore?
Someone: You guys ban chewing gum and cane people for vandalizing
Me: Great... what else?
Someone: What else?
Me: Yeah, what else do you know about Singapore?
Someone: Er...
Me: Dude, thats pathetic. You should read up more.
Someone: Why should I? You guys have the death penalty....
Me (*bangs head on wall*): You guys are hopeless

Singapore badly needs a PR campaign. They almost think we are on par with North Korea. For my part, I have invited this someone to come to Singapore for a week so that I can introduce him to Singapore National Education so that he will appreciate our gahmen country :)

LoL, bad things seems to be easier to remember then the good things. Reminds me of one of your article where Singapore shows the bad news of other countries only. Sounds to me like the other country did the same thing ;)

haha fixcon, you're right. We seem to have a better memory for bad things than the good ones... unless of course, it is our local media when it comes to reporting local news :)

You rightly said that the local newspaper here is the same like our media when it comes to reporting other country news. The difference is that the papers here also do the same when it comes to local news :)

hey heather, hahahaha.... i think that question is something that every Singaporean has been asked when he travels/lives outside Asia and Australia :)

The next time I get that question, I am tempted to say... "you donch know Singapore meh? We is the hub of electronics, tourism, chinese medicine, water sports, sex.... everything! We is the most powderful non-nuclear superpower of the wurl." ... and quickly take a photo of the look on their face :)

Several years back, in an online chat medium, an American asked me, "Do you ride elephants in Singapore [as a means of transport]?"

Hyak hyak...

Well, one time, I picked up the phone, and suddenly I hear an onslaught of Chinese...I had to say "Wait! wait! Can you speak English??" and turned out this guy was calling from Australia. It was something work related.

Wah crazy man...I think he thinks we're all Chinese speaking/located in China.
